Artist Biography
ARTIST BIO: Linda Whittemore

Linda Whittemore became an artist to express the world around her. Her surroundings are a never-ending source for new creations. There is honesty about her work that comes through to the viewer.

Linda works in a printmaking style called viscosity monotype, although she is trained in the traditional form of Intaglio printmaking. Her works are a story of color and mood, She continues to paint scenes around the island of Maui and further abstracts them in her studio using the printmaking process. Often, watercolor plein aire paintings are a prelude to her original monotypes. "It's all a process, one medium leads to the next. We create from what we know or don't know. My paintings are who I am." Linda also has enjoyed painting the figure for many years.

Linda began a life long relationship with watercolor painting at the age of eight. She studied two full years with the past president of the Watercolor Society, Roger Armstrong, as well as other teachers like Chris Sullivan, Hiroke Morinue, Richard Nelson, Roger Folk George Allen and John Cosby. Chris Nugent was a student of Phil Dike, Millard Sheets and Rex Brandt. Sullivan was also a student of Diebenkorn, so Linda was able to gain a very contemporary understanding of painting. Her mother is Margaret Bedell, a well-known painter. Her grandmother was Margaret Hogarth Trumbull, notably an accomplished Plein AIre painter.

Linda grew up in Laguna Beach, California. Linda exhibited in the Art A Fair as a young artist and apprenticed in the Corona del Mar Studio as a printmaker with other printmakers that had worked at both Gemini and Crown Point Press.

She attended Laguna School of Art for several years, also Saddleback and Orange Coast Colleges, and Mira Costa College in Southern California where she studied printmaking.

Linda's work is part of the Hawaii State Foundation Art Museum Collection located in Honolulu.

Linda currently spends time between Maui and at her family home in Corona Del Mar. Her work is represented in Laguna Beach at Pacific Edge Gallery.
